This maritime telescope is designed for display, although it does have a 32x magnification under certain conditions. It has a tripod that can extend to about 60" high and the scope is removable from the stand. The scope length is approximately 40". Lens cap is attached by a decorative chain. Although this item does function it is not a high quality telescope.Galileo is credited with inventing the first refracting telescope. Through his understanding of how light passes through a lens, he was able to construct a device that focused on an image and enabled the user to see an object as though it were brighter, clearer, and closer.
